Franky’s Foundation: Turning E-Waste into Opportunity
We spoke to Frankline Ojiambo about his project and how the Falling Walls Engage Pitches helped to increase the visibility of Franky’s Foundation. In October 2023, he was honoured as a National Hero by Kenya’s President for his contributions to climate action and philanthropy. Frankline pitched his project Breaking the Wall to E-Waste Solutions for the Climate at the Falling Walls Science Summit Engage Pitches 2024.
What is your Franky’s Foundation about?
Franky’s Foundation is dedicated to empowering young people in Kenya through digital education, e-waste management, and sustainable innovation. Our 6-week incubation program provides hands-on training in refurbishing and recycling electronic waste, equipping participants with valuable skills to tackle unemployment while addressing climate challenges. Since 2019, we have empowered over 5,000 youths, created jobs for 85% of our graduates, and recycled over 500 tons of e-waste.
What made you start this project, and how did Falling Walls Engage contribute to its development?
Growing up in one of Kenya’s most disadvantaged areas, I witnessed the struggles of unemployment and environmental pollution first-hand. This fueled my passion for using technology as a tool for empowerment. Being part of Falling Walls Engage in 2024 significantly boosted our credibility and has given us access to a global network of experts and changemakers. The experience has also inspired new ideas for scaling our impact, particularly in expanding digital literacy programs in underserved regions.
